Morning work or morning bins?
Do you prefer to start your first-grade school day with seatwork or morning bins? Engaging morning bins can be a great way to begin the day in a low-key way. It lets students enjoy some socialization and fun and gives you a chance to take care of all the morning tasks that need completed.
Well planned morning bins can also help you achieve some learning targets or review standards at the same time! I’m a big believer in accountability- so many of these activities still have something for students to turn-in.
In this post, I’ll share ten math morning bins that are perfect for the month of January. I hope these activities will give your first graders a great start to their day. Don’t use morning bins? They also make great math centers or activities for your early finishers.
January Morning Bins for Addition and Subtraction
Missing Addend Memory
First graders love playing memory! This set is perfect for practicing missing addends. It has a fun winter theme with snow globes and snowflakes. I recommend making multiple sets of this activity.
Subtraction to 15 Flip and Cover
Flip and cover is a really fun game! Students can play in groups from 2-8 students. They take turns flipping over a card, solving the subtraction problem, and covering the answer on their board. You can play to get 3 in a row, or to cover the entire board. If students finish, they can shuffle the cards and play again!
True and False Equations Sorting
Students sort the fact cards under the true and false headers. This activity also includes a recording sheet, so you can add an accountability piece to the activity. Understanding the equal sign is one of the trickiest first grade concepts- students need lots of practice with this skill.
Winter Word Problems
Put the mat into a dry-erase pocket and students can use the mat to solve the word problems. This set includes eight word problems for students to solve.
Place Value Morning Bins
10 More and 10 Less Puzzles
Your students will love putting these puzzles together again and again! They will practice the place value skill of finding 10 less and 10 more while matching the pieces together. This set includes 40 pieces (20 puzzles) for students to match.
Comparing 2-Digit Numbers
This activity works great for partners! Each student grabs a snowball and places it on the mat. Then students take turns adding the greater than or less than symbol to each pair of numbers. Then, they grab 2 more cards and keep going! Want just this activity? It is available on its own in my TPT shop!

Geometry January Morning Bins
2D Shapes 5 In a Row Game
Play this game like Bingo! Students take turns rolling the dice and covering a spot with a 2-D shape with the matching number of sides. Students will love to play this game again and again.
3D Shapes Flip and Cover
Students will practice identifying real-life 3D shapes with this game. They take turns flipping over the card and naming what 3D shape the object is. Then, they find the matching shape on their game board and cover it. They try to get 3 in a row, or you can play black out.
Measurement and Data Morning Bins
Time the Hour Task Cards for Winter
Your first graders will practice time the hour with these task cards. They take a card and record the matching time on the recording sheet. They will practice drawing the hands on the analog clock and recording the digital time. Then, they turn in the worksheet for accountability.
Winter Graphing
Your students will practice representing data on a bar graph with these winter morning bin task cards. Students grab a card and the matching graph sheet. They record the data on the bar graph and turn in their work. This set includes 8 data cards! Perfect for students to use for multiple days! This activity is available as part of the set- or on its own– in my TPT shop.
